Speed bags are a common part of any boxing training session.

A speed bag is often used in a boxing environment to help to build on the overall speed of the boxer, while also adding a rhythmic layer to the way that punches are thrown.

Is A Homemade Platform Better Than A Commercial Platform?

The short answer depends on the way that you look towards making a speed bag platform on your own.

There are quite a few benefits that come with this.

One of the main benefits involves the fact that you can mount the platform up to any height you desire, as opposed to relying on standard commercial heights that might not suit your exact needs.

Another thing that you should consider is the cost of making your own homemade speed bag platform.

Lumber generally doesn’t cost much, and all you really need is a few high-quality pieces of wood and some screws to get started.

Naturally, this results in a price that is just a fraction of the cost that would come with a commercial speed bag platform.

Homemade platforms can be just as good as commercial platforms, if not better.

They are relatively easy to build and you can actually improvise most of what you do with a little bit of common sense.

This also presents a fantastic opportunity for people who are limited to a certain amount of space, as the kit can be adjusted to fit perfectly.

How Do You make one?

There are plenty of different methods that you could use to make your own speed bag platform, you just need to use a little bit of imagination.

As well as some wood, some screws, and a few other items!

One of the most popular ways to make your own speed bag platform actually involves the use of a power rack to mount it within.

This gives you a completely adjustable station to work with.

This also means that the speed bag could be used by people of a variety of different heights without a problem.

Using this method, the homemade speed bag platform rests directly on the safety bars of the power rack.

This is a good method that offers a high level of security, it also makes the platform even easier to build.

You can make your own by following these steps:

Step 1

Start by measuring your power rack.

You then need to cut approximately four – six pieces of wood down to the exact length of the rack.

You should then cut several short strips to run perpendicular to the bottom of the platform, these strips will keep it perfectly in place.

Step 2

You should then go on to mount the speed bag swivel to a thick piece of plywood.

It should be a square shape, with approximately two feet of length on each side.

Step 3

After you have mounted your speed bag swivel to the plywood, you should add all of your original pieces of wood to the top of the power rack.

Do this by using the safety bars as a rest.

You should then screw the plywood into the very center, using different points to make sure that it is secure.

After That…

You can get straight to work on building your own speed and stamina.

If you do find that your homemade speed bag platform has a habit of moving, then you can put weights on top of it to keep it firmly in place.

One of the best things about using a power rack to mount your speed bag platform is that it turns out to be a fully-adjustable piece.

All you have to do is lower or lift the safety bars that are on the rack to move the platform.

This makes it great for use in a family home where people of all ages and sizes can easily join in the fun.

This type of speed bag platform ends up being just as good as a commercial platform that you would find in a professional boxing gym — if not better.

The difference is that it works out to be a fraction of the cost that would come with a professional piece of kit.

Are there other methods?

There are a number of different methods that you could use to build your own speed bag platform.

All you really need is a few pieces of high-quality lumber and some nails, although some people have successfully made their own using cost-efficient scrap wood.

All you need to take into consideration is the security of your platform, and whether or not any structural damage could be caused to the property if you mount it in the wrong place.

You need to make sure that the platform is secured to the roof, and that the speed bag is secured to the platform.

What are speed bags for?

Inside of professional boxing gyms, speed bags are used for a variety of different reasons.

Naturally, using a speed bag involves working on your own sense of timing.

The movement of the speed bag can also be used to improve your hand-eye coordination and the speed at which you can punch.

But, one of the main benefits that comes with the continuous use of a speed bag can be seen through the eyes of a trainer.

When using a speed bag, boxers have to keep their hands up.

This can make dropping the hands feel unnatural over time, high hands can result in non-stop punches and protection.
